Take away and write
Count the crossed-out pictures and the pictures left in each group. Write both missing numbers in the subtraction sentence.
Count and add
Count the pictures in each group, write the two numbers and find how many there are altogether. The first addition is shown as an example.
Cross out and subtract 1
Cross out pictures to match each subtraction sentence, then write the missing number. Some questions give the amount taken away; others give the amount left.
Hop and add
Start at zero and draw three hops on each number line. Add the three numbers and write where you land.
Turn-around facts
Count both groups and complete the turn-around addition facts. The groups change places, but the total stays the same.
Number families
Use the three numbers in each triangle to complete two addition facts and two subtraction facts. The four number families have totals of 7, 9, 10 and 13.
Cross out and subtract 2
Cross out counters to subtract within 20. Draw the counters yourself for the final two questions, then write how many remain.
Part, part, whole
Read each short addition story, fill in the parts and whole, and write an addition sentence. The worked apple example shows all three steps.
Keep the same total
Choose how one addend must change when the other changes, keeping the total the same. Complete the new addition sentence for each example.
Make 10 to add
Split the second number to make ten first, then add the rest. Complete eight addition facts and a short story about pages read.
Doubles facts
Draw matching spots on the other side of each ladybug and write the double. Practise doubles through 10 + 10, then find the double that makes each total.
Near doubles
Use the pictured towers to connect doubles and near doubles. Double the smaller number, then add one to complete each addition fact.
Fact families to 20
Write two addition facts and two subtraction facts for each number triangle. Finish with four missing-number equations, all within 20.
Number line hops: add
Hop forward on number lines to add within 20. The example splits a hop at ten; six more facts at the bottom are for mental practice.
Add tens with blocks
Count the tens rods in each group, add the tens and write the matching addition sentence. The worked example shows 30 + 20 = 50.
Number line hops: subtract
Hop backwards on number lines to subtract within 20, using ten as a stopping point. Finish with six mental subtraction facts.
